As it happened
Real Madrid hosted Villarreal last night at La Liga, aiming to reduce the point difference with the table topper. Real boss Carlo Ancelotti played his team in his usual 4-3-3 formation but made some changes in the midfield. He benched Luka Modric and Fede Velverde. However, Benzema led the frontline with the two young lads, Vinicius and Rodrygo. The match started with the home taking the lead early in the game. From the start, Real Madrid pushed the visitors highly at Bernabeu. As a result, the home team didn't have to wait much to find the net. In the 16th minute, Asensio took a shot that found the net after deflecting on Pau Torres. After that, Real Madrid created more chances but failed to score. They conceded just before half-time as Samuel Chukwueze scored the equalizer for Villarreal with Lo Celso's assist in the 39th minute. Therefore, the first half ended 1-1. Returning from the break, the Los Blancos took the lead again. This time, Vinicius Junior scored a fantastic solo goal in the 48th minute to put Madrid in front. It seemed Real Madrid were winning the game. But the match changed in the final 20 minutes. Villarreal striker Jose Luis Morales leveled the scoreline for the visitors in the 70th minute, which gave them a lifeline for Villarreal. However, it looked like an offside, but the match referee declared it a goal after the VAR check. Scoring the 2nd equalizer, Villarreal became more dangerous in the final ten minutes. They highly pressed the home team for the goals. Finally, the visitors took the lead as Samuel Chukwueze scored a brilliant goal for Villarreal in the 80th minute. Real Madrid tried hard but failed to score more in the remaining minutes. As a result, Villarreal got a important victory at Santiago Bernabeu and packed all three points.Related reading
