Who are Major League Baseball's Current Heavyweights?

We all know of the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, but much like the rest of the sporting market, Baseball is constantly evolving. Over the generations, different teams have risen to the fore. It was the aforementioned Beantown outfit that initially dominated, while their Big Apple rivals shone brightest at the turn of the millennium with four titles in five years. But which teams find themselves as heavyweights in the ongoing 2024 campaign?

The reigning champions are the Texas Rangers, who managed to complete a Cinderella story last season. They defied their lowly fifth seeding to reel off three straight underdog victories before defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks in the World Series. But despite their victory last term, they aren't considered heavy hitters by many and they may miss the playoffs altogether this term. So, if they aren't one of the MLB's strongest teams at present, who is?

Los Angeles Dodgers

Let’s start with a seriously impressive one. As the 2024 season begins to heat up, the latest MLB betting odds currently make the Los Angeles Dodgers the short-priced +310 favorites for the World Series. While the Cali outfit has won just one championship since 1988, in recent years, they have consistently made deep postseason runs. They reached the World Series three times in four seasons between 2017 and 2020, inexplicably losing the first two to the Houston Astros and subsequently the Red Sox, before securing redemption with a 4-2 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays.

They made headlines earlier this year by Signing Shohei Ohtani - arguably the best player in the world - to a whopping $700m ten-year-deal from their cross-city rival, Los Angeles Angels. The Japanese pitcher/designated hitter has proven to be a sensation since heading stateside from the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters back in 2018, and he has received additional support in his pitching duties from Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow. Ohtani's performances with the Angels last year were nothing short of spectacular, and he secured the second MVP award of his career.

His addition to a roster already teeming with talent has seen the Dodgers emerge as the dominant force in the MLB. They currently find themselves at the summit of a stacked NL West in which four of the five teams have a positive win/loss record. Should Los Angeles manage to top that quintet, then a second World Series in four years could be around the corner.

Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves entered 2024 with the momentum of a stellar previous season under their belt. Last year, they finished with a mighty 104 wins, the most in the entire league, but unfortunately, they weren't able to convert that into championship glory. Despite their regular season heroics, they were Stunned by the Philadelphia Phillies in the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

Anchored by the brilliant performances of heavy-hitting Ronald Acuña Jr., the Georgian outfit's lineup remains as formidable as the one that led them to World Series glory just two years ago. The Venezuelan slugger's historic 2023 season featured a .337/.416/.596 slash line, 41 home runs, and 73 stolen bases, making him the first player in MLB history to achieve a 40-70 season. Many thought that would result in a second World Series appearance in three campaigns, but ultimately, it wasn't to be.

Key players like Matt Olson, Austin Riley, and Ozzie Albies continue to provide offensive firepower, making them a nightmare for opposing pitchers. The Braves have also bolstered their roster with the additions of Chris Sale and Jarred Kelenic, ensuring they have both depth and talent to sustain their winning ways. They are currently battling it out with the Phillies for divisional honors, so expect that duo to face off for a third straight postseason.

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are once again among the elite, thanks in large part to the towering presence of Aaron Judge. The 32-year-old Californian hit 46 home runs last season and he has driven the Big Apple side to the upper echelons of the AL East, where the Yankees are currently battling it out with the Baltimore Orioles. While they may be among the contenders for glory once again this term, the New Yorkers are still a far cry from the team that once dominated the MLB.

The Yankees reached six World Series in eight years in the late 1990s and early 2000s, winning four of them. They are currently in the midst of a 15-year drought, however, but if Judge continues in his blistering form then that could well come to an end this season. The addition of Juan Soto has only added to the Yankees' offensive arsenal, making their lineup one of the most feared. And with a rotation anchored by Gerrit Cole and the promising development of young talents like Anthony Volpe, they are poised to make yet another deep postseason run.
