Paris Saint-Germain Retain UEFA Super Cup with 2-1 Victory Over Aston Villa

Paris Saint-Germain lifted their second consecutive UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night, overcoming a resilient Aston Villa side 2–1 at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg. Goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué proved decisive for the French champions, cancelling out a late first-half equalizer from Villa’s young forward Brian Madjo.

With this success, Luis Enrique’s side became only the fourth team in European football history to win back-to-back Super Cups, following in the footsteps of Ajax, AC Milan, and Real Madrid. For Aston Villa, participating in their first Super Cup since 1982, the performance offered plenty of encouragement despite the narrow defeat.

Early PSG Pressure Breaks Villa's Low Block

From the opening whistle, PSG established control of possession, pushing Unai Emery’s side deep into their own defensive third. Playing with a fluid front line, the Parisian side dominated early midfield exchanges and controlled the tempo through clean, short passing combinations. Villa initially sat back in a compact 4-4-2 formation, aiming to absorb pressure and hit PSG on rapid counter-attacks through the wide channels. However, the early resistance broke down in the 20th minute.

Collecting the ball on the left side of the penalty area, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia cut inside past his defender to create a yard of space. The Georgian winger drilled a low, curling shot into the far corner past the outstretched arms of the Villa goalkeeper to give PSG a deserved 1–0 lead.

Madjo Strikes on the Stroke of Halftime

After going behind, Aston Villa gradually grew into the contest. Emery urged his team to step higher up the pitch, forcing PSG into occasional turnovers in their own half. Villa created two half-chances midway through the opening forty-five minutes, utilizing set pieces to put pressure on PSG's back line.

Just as the match approached the halftime break, Villa found their equalizer in the 45th minute. Following a rapid break down the right flank, a whipped cross found Brian Madjo inside the six-yard box. The forward reacted quickest, guiding a clean finish past the PSG goalkeeper to make it 1–1 right before the referee blew for the interval.

Doué Delivers the Winner

PSG responded with renewed urgency after the break. Luis Enrique’s team lifted their pressing intensity, reclaiming control of the central zones and starving Villa of transition opportunities. The decisive moment arrived in the 61st minute. A patient 12-pass sequence around the perimeter of the Villa box dragged defenders out of position. The ball was fed centrally to Désiré Doué, who took one controlling touch before dispatching an angled, low finish into the bottom right corner. Doué’s strike restored PSG’s advantage at 2–1 and proved to be the match-winning goal.

Aston Villa pushed forward in search of another equalizer during the final twenty minutes. Emery introduced fresh attacking legs off the bench, switching to a more direct style. Villa managed two late corner kicks and a long-range effort that sailed over the crossbar, but PSG’s defensive unit held firm through four minutes of stoppage time to seal the win.

This victory represents PSG’s 61st official trophy in club history and marks a successful start to their 2026/27 campaign following their 2025 Super Cup win against Tottenham Hotspur. Aston Villa will turn their attention back to domestic action, taking confidence from a competitive display against the reigning European champions.
