As It Happened
The first Milan Derby of the 2023-2024 campaign took place last night at the historical San Siro Stadium. Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi played his team in a dynamic 3-5-2 formation, where Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram played as the two strikers. The boss used two wing-backs with the backings of three center-backs. On the other hand, Milan boss Stefano Pioli set up his team formation with the classic 4-3-3 setup. Experienced striker Oliver Giroud led Milan's attack with Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic. However, the match started with Inter Milan taking an early lead. Midfielder Henrick Mkhitaryan scored an impressive goal in just five minutes of the game with the help of Dimarco. Although AC Milan made a strong response after the goal, they couldn't break Inter's defense. Inter Milan doubled their lead just before half-time. It was Marcus Thuram who netted the second goal of the game in the 38th minute. Returning from the break, Portuguese winger Rafael Leao gave AC Milan a lifeline. At the beginning of the second half, he scored a brilliant goal that boosted the team's morale. But Inter Milan handled it very wisely, keeping their nerve cool. After a while, Henrick Mkhitaryan got his second goal as he found the net in the 69th minute from Lautaro Martinez's assist. After that, AC Milan couldn't fight back again. They conceded two more goals in the remaining minutes. In the 79th minute, Hakan Calhanoglu made the scoreline 4-1 for Inter Milan as he scored from the spot kick. Davide Frattesi hit the last one for the Nerazzurri. He found the net in the injury time and secured a dominating victory against AC Milan.Simone Inzaghi on Inter's Performance
Inter Milan boss Simone Inzagi is very pleased with his team's performance. He said, “Winning five consecutive derbies is something that hasn’t happened in a long time [ed. It has never happened before].” “I’m happy for the whole Inter family, this is an important result. But we’re still only on the fourth match of the season. Now comes the difficult part. We have to interpret the rest of the matches well, as we’ve done in these first four," the manager added.Related reading
