Losing the toss, Sri Lanka started their batting innings with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. But the two openers failed to get a good start. They couldn't stay long on the crease. Sri Lanka lost their first wicket in the 2nd over as Kusal Mendis departed the pitch, scoring 10 runs. A few moments later, Pathum Nissanka also followed the same path. Losing two wickets in 29 runs, Sri Lanka were in deep trouble. But Kusal Perera and Dhananjaya de Silva played a vital role to tackle the disaster. The two batters played very carefully between the wickets. They made a brilliant partnership of 60 runs. Their partnership was looking good, but Kiwi pacer Adam Milne broke their partnership in the 12th over by taking the wicket of Kusal Perera. Before leaving the crease, Kusal Perea scored 35 off 32 balls. Unfortunately, Dhananjaya de Silva also lost his wicket in the following over, scoring the highest 37 off 26 for the Lankans. After that, Adam Milne became very aggressive and picked up five wickets in total to destroy the Lankan batting lineup.
