There is nothing quite like the early weeks of an English football season. The summer sun might still be lingering, but the floodlights are already buzzing, the smell of damp grass and burgers is back in the air, and the domestic cup madness is officially underway. The first round of the Carabao Cup always treats us to its fair share of giant-killings, chaotic penalty shootouts, and heroic lower-league upsets. But just as the dust begins to settle, the stakes take a massive leap forward. The second round has officially been drawn, and it brings with it the highly anticipated entry of the Premier League clubs who aren’t burdened by European football this season.
All-Premier League Blockbusters
Teams usually hope to avoid playing another top-tier side this early in the tournament, but the draw threw up two all-Premier League matchups right away. The standout tie in the southern section puts Southampton against West Ham United. Both teams want to build momentum and make a solid run in the domestic cups, meaning this match should be a competitive test even if managers decide to rotate their squads.
The other all-top-flight fixture features Ipswich Town hosting Leicester City. Having played against each other frequently in recent seasons, both sides know each other's styles well. It is a fixture that could easily pass for a regular Premier League weekend match, but instead, it takes place as a midweek knockout game.
London Clubs Face Mixed Trips
For the other Premier League clubs based in London, the draw handed them a mix of home fixtures and tricky away trips against lower-league opponents. Chelsea begins their cup run at Stamford Bridge against League One side Luton Town. While Chelsea will be heavily favored on paper, cup games rarely go entirely to plan if the home side isn't fully focused. Tottenham Hotspur draws Charlton Athletic for a London fixture, while Fulham makes the short trip to face AFC Wimbledon. These local games always bring a good crowd and plenty of motivation from lower-tier hosts looking to test themselves against top-flight players.
Tough Tests Up North
In the northern section of the draw, Premier League sides have some challenging away matches ahead against historic clubs. Nottingham Forest will play Leeds United at the City Ground. It is a traditional fixture with plenty of history between the two fanbases, making it one of the most anticipated ties of the round.
Newcastle United gets a home game against West Bromwich Albion at St. James' Park, which is always a difficult venue for visiting teams. Meanwhile, Everton makes a short trip to Deepdale to face Preston North End, a classic ground where top-tier teams have occasionally stumbled over the years. Elsewhere, Wolves travel to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday, and Burnley heads to take on Bradford City at Valley Parade. Both matches give lower-league clubs a great opportunity to host Premier League opposition in front of loud home crowds.
Tournament Format and Rules
As usual in the early rounds of the Carabao Cup, there is no extra time if games are tied after 90 minutes. Matches go straight to a penalty shootout to decide the winner, which helps keep the schedule manageable for players early in a busy season.
The top Premier League clubs involved in European competitions—such as Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa—are still sitting this round out. They will enter the competition in the third round. But for the rest of the teams involved later this month, the journey to the final at Wembley begins right here.
