Brighton Stun Premier League Champions Arsenal!

Brighton & Hove Albion produced one of the biggest results of the Premier League season so far as they defeated defending champions Arsenal 3–0 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday. Arsenal arrived on the south coast in excellent form. Mikel Arteta’s side had won their opening four Premier League matches and had conceded only once. They were also looking for an eighth straight victory in all competitions. However, Brighton had completely different plans.

Match Report

From the opening minutes, Brighton played with confidence and energy. Fabian Hürzeler’s team pressed Arsenal high up the pitch and did not allow the visitors to settle into their usual rhythm. Arsenal had more possession, but Brighton looked much more dangerous when they moved forward.

The pressure finally paid off in the 31st minute. Charalampos Kostoulas helped create the opportunity for Pascal Grob, who found space near the edge of the penalty area. The experienced midfielder produced a composed finish to give Brighton a deserved 1–0 lead. Things became even worse for Arsenal just before half-time. Kostoulas, who had already caused plenty of problems for the Arsenal defence, got his reward with Brighton’s second goal. The 19-year-old finished brilliantly to send the home side into the break with a 2–0 advantage.

Arsenal needed a strong response in the second half, but Brighton continued to control the important moments of the match. In the 57th minute, the hosts effectively ended Arsenal’s hopes of a comeback. Grob delivered from a corner, and Chema Andres rose to head the ball home. It was Andres’ first Premier League start for Brighton, and he marked the occasion with his first goal for the club.

At 3–0, Arsenal were facing a long way back. Arteta made changes as he tried to find a response, but Brighton remained organised and continued to create chances of their own. The statistics showed how effective Brighton were. Arsenal finished with around 60% of the possession, but managed only one shot on target. Brighton had five shots on target and created several other dangerous opportunities. The final score could have been even more painful for the champions.

Arteta admitted after the match that Brighton deserved their victory and said his team had lessons to learn from the defeat. The manager said, "First of all with the performance and then with the result. I think we need to give credit to Brighton as well, the manner that they played today, the way they competed today, and overall I think they deserve to win the game."
