Paris Saint-Germain produced a brilliant attacking display to beat Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night in the UEFA Champions League. The French champions took control of the game with three first-half goals and survived a second-half fightback from the hosts to secure a memorable away victory. Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha and Maghnes Akliouche were on target for PSG, while Erling Haaland scored twice for Manchester City. Despite creating several chances, the English side could not recover from their disastrous start.
As It Happened
Manchester City entered the match hoping to make home advantage count, but their plans quickly fell apart as PSG made a flying start.
The visitors needed just 13 minutes to break the deadlock. Desire Doue found the back of the net to give PSG an early advantage. Things went from bad to worse for City only two minutes later as Ousmane Dembele doubled PSG's lead in the 15th minute. City attempted to regain control through possession, but PSG looked dangerous whenever they moved forward. In the 32nd minute, Vitinha added a third goal to put PSG firmly in command.
City continued to search for a response, but they went into the halftime break trailing by three goals. They returned from the break with greater urgency. Man City's efforts paid off in the 53rd minute when Erling Haaland scored to reduce the deficit to 3-1. The Norwegian striker gave the home supporters a reason to believe that an unlikely comeback might still be possible.
However, PSG eventually put the contest beyond City's reach when Maghnes Akliouche scored their fourth goal and made the scoreline 4-1. Meanwhile, Haaland scored again in the 75th minute for the home side but it was not enough to earn a point from this game. City boss Enzo Maresca took this game as a lesson. He said, "From tonight’s game, we can learn many things. I continue to learn from the players because I just arrived three months ago."
On the other hand, PSG boss Luis Enrique highly appreciated his players as well as their fans. He said, "Our team is incredible. It's so courageous and looks to win every single game. And those who are really incredible are our fans. Did you hear them during the match? Our supporters enjoyed this game and that's fantastic for us. Today, I think we showed the ambition we always show: to try and win the game in the very first minutes."
