Match Report
Unai Emery's Aston Villa has been one of the most surprising teams this season, and they are still in the top four. Following their flying win over Sheffield United with a 5-0 margin, Aston Villa were favorite when they welcomed Chelsea last night at Villa Park. Villa boss Unai Emery played his team in a 4-2-3-1 formation, where Ollie Watkins led the frontline. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino, who has been under a lot of pressure, followed the same formation against Aston Villa. He deployed Cole Palmer in the front with the back of Nicolas Jackson, Conor Gallagher, and Noni Madueke. However, the match started with the visitors taking an early lead at Villa Park. It was Conor Gallagher who broke the deadlock for the Blues as he found the back of the net in just 11 minutes with the help of Noni Madueke. Aston Villa, somehow, seemed different in this match as they were not as aggressive as they are in the Premier League. The first half an hour was in control of Chelsea, and they created tons of chances. As a result, the Blues didn't have to wait much to double the lead. This time, Nicolas Jackson scored a brilliant goal with a powerful header. He converted Malo Gusto's cross into a goal in the 20th minute, giving a two-goal lead to the Blues. However, Aston Villa responded well after conceding these two goals. They could have scored in the first half, but Chelsea's goalkeeper made some stunning saves in the first half. Chelsea, therefore, went to the break with a two-goal lead. Coming from the break, Chelsea got another early goal in the second half, which was from Enzo Fernandez. The World Cup winner showed his class at Villa Park as he scored a mindblowing goal from a free kick. His powerful shot from 30 yards distance beat his native Emi Martinez to find the back of the net. However, Moussa Diaby returned a goal for Aston Villa in the injury time, but it didn't help to avoid the defeat against Chelsea. In the end, Chelsea won the match by a 3-1 margin and booked their place in the 5th round of the FA Cup.Related reading
