Manchester United will look to put their disappointing domestic form behind them when they travel to Spain to face Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night. Both teams have different reasons to chase a victory in their second league-phase match of the competition. Atletico Madrid have enjoyed a strong start to their La Liga campaign and will hope to carry that momentum into Europe. Diego Simeone's side suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Liverpool in their Champions League opener, leaving them without a point after the first round.
Manchester United, meanwhile, started their European campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Azerbaijan's Sabah FK. However, their Premier League performances have been far less impressive, putting manager Michael Carrick under increasing pressure. While Carrick was asked whether he feels any pressure, he replied, "We know what we want and what we expect. That comes from us. I know what it looks like, I don't feel the pressure from that, I want to win and succeed. There's no negativity, we're embracing the challenge."
On the other hand, Atletico boss Diego Simeone does not want to consider Man United's recent form in the Premier League. He said, "We face an opponent that applies intense pressure in your half, closing you down quickly, and has players with speed. Despite their recent results, including a lot of draws, they are still creating the kind of danger that they did last year. They're a strong team."
Stats & Facts
- Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their four previous competitive European meetings with Manchester United, recording two wins and two draws.
- Atletico Madrid eliminated Manchester United from the 2021-22 Champions League round of 16, winning 2-1 on aggregate.
- Diego Simeone's side have won four consecutive matches in all competitions and will be looking for their fifth straight victory against Manchester United.
- Manchester United have won only one of their first six Premier League matches this season, collecting six points. It is their worst start to a league campaign since 1986-87.
- Despite their unbeaten record against United, Atletico Madrid have won only two of their last 15 matches against English opposition.
- Manchester United have lost just one of their last 11 competitive matches against Spanish opponents.
Team News
Atletico Madrid do not have serious injury concerns ahead of the match. Julian Alvarez will lead the attack with Lee Kang-in. Cristian Romero, very familiar with playing against Man United, will protect Atletico's defense along with David Hancko.
As for Man United, Benjamin Sesko is progressing well, but this game comes too soon for him. Matthijs de Ligt is out of the team due to a back injury, while Luke Shaw and Kobbie Maino picked up an injury during the match against Tottenham Hotspur. So Carlos Baleba will make his Champions League debut for Man United tomorrow, while Leny Yoro will start as a left-back to replace Shaw.
Possible Lineup for Atletico Madrid:
Oblak; Pubill, Romero, Hancko, Grimaldo; Simeone, Llorente, Cardoso, Baena; Lee, Alvarez
Possible Lineup for Man United:
Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Yoro; Baleba, Tielemans; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha
Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Man United
Atletico Madrid have been one of the strongest teams in La Liga during the opening months of the 2026-27 season. They will enter Tuesday's contest as favourites, largely because of their excellent form and home advantage. However, the visitors should not be underestimated. United scored four goals in their opening Champions League match. The biggest question is whether United can remain defensively disciplined throughout the match.
