Betfair vs Smarkets in 2026: Fees, Depth and Best Fit
TL;DR
Smarkets has the simpler 2% Standard Tier, while Betfair can be the better execution venue when its exact market and tool coverage matter. The honest choice uses account-specific fees and a live three-market test, not one universal liquidity claim.

Betfair vs Smarkets at a glance
| Decision factor | Betfair | Smarkets |
|---|---|---|
| Standard fee | Depends on account package and region | 2% Standard Tier |
| High-activity rules | Transaction charges can apply above 5,000 qualifying transactions in an hour | Pro Tier required above 1,500 bets or £1 million staked in a calendar month |
| Profitable-user rule | Expert Fee can apply after published profit and market thresholds | 3% Select Tier can apply above the published 12-month net-profit threshold |
| Funding model | Conventional account cashier | Conventional account with closed-loop withdrawals |
| Best evidence | Live price, size and account fee | Live price, size and account tier |
Commission is not a simple 5% versus 2%
Betfair's current charge terms say exchange commission is applied to net market winnings. In regions using My Betfair Rewards, the package selected in the account determines the rate. The terms give a 2% Basic package example, which is why a current account screen is more reliable than a generic claim that every Betfair user pays 5%.
Smarkets' current commission FAQ lists a 2% Standard Tier, 1% Pro Tier and 3% Select Tier. The Pro Tier is tied to placed-bet or monthly-stake thresholds. The Select Tier is tied to net profit over the previous 12 calendar months. The calculation basis also changes: Standard is 2% of net market profit, while Pro and Select charge each settled matched bet on the profit if it wins or the loss if it loses.
For a normal retail comparison, enter the rate shown in each account into our betting exchange commission calculator. Do not borrow a percentage from another user's region or tier.
Where Betfair can be the better choice
- The required sport or market is unavailable on Smarkets.
- More money is actually available at the price and time you need.
- Your strategy depends on a compatible tool or workflow.
- The accepted average price remains better after commission.
- The account does not meet an additional-charge threshold that changes the result.
We do not publish one permanent liquidity percentage. Market depth changes by event, price, time and side of the book. The correct comparison is a timestamped order-book check.
Where Smarkets can be the better choice
- The account is on the 2% Standard Tier and the target market has enough size.
- You prefer a simpler conventional interface and fee model.
- The payment methods and closed-loop withdrawal rules fit your banking workflow.
- The lower visible fee produces the better result after accepted odds.
- Your activity and profit remain within the tier assumptions used in the comparison.
Smarkets is not automatically cheaper for every active winner. Its Pro Tier has a lower percentage but comes with an opt-in requirement once an activity threshold is crossed. Its Select Tier is higher than Standard. Check the account statistics page instead of assuming.
The three-market depth test
- Choose a major pre-match market, an in-play market and a smaller event.
- At the same minute, record the best back and lay price on both exchanges.
- Record available size at the first three price levels.
- Place only a small test order and note any partial fill or price improvement.
- Calculate net return using the actual account rate.
- Repeat at the normal time before the event when you usually trade.
A lower rate wins only when the order can be filled at a competitive price. If the cheaper platform forces a worse price or leaves exposure unmatched, the visible saving may disappear.
What high-volume users need to know
Betfair's terms describe transaction charges for more than 5,000 qualifying transactions in an hour, after commission offsets. The current Expert Fee FAQ says an account can only be considered when last 52 active-week gross profit exceeds £25,000, lifetime gross profit is positive and more than 100 markets have been traded.
Smarkets says the Pro threshold counts placed bets and liability, including unmatched and partly matched orders. A strategy that posts and cancels many orders can therefore reach a threshold differently from a casual user's settled turnover.
Neither retail table replaces an account-specific calculation. Save the weekly or monthly fee screen and ask support to confirm how the exact strategy is classified.
Funding and withdrawal
Smarkets uses a closed-loop system, returning funds according to the methods used to deposit. Betfair's terms direct customers to the account cashier for current deposit and withdrawal charges and say additional charges can apply in some cases. Verify supported methods, limits, processing and any currency conversion inside each account.
Do not keep a larger balance merely to avoid transfer friction. Keep the amount required for planned positions and complete a small withdrawal before relying on any route.
Where SharkBetX fits
SharkBetX is relevant when the reader wants a product that feels more like a modern sports trading interface than a conventional betting account. It is open for registration, currently uses a 3% standard setting and presents Polymarket markets with back and lay controls, live odds and Polygon settlement.
The public Polymarket APIs expose order books and market volume, while wallet funding can avoid closed-loop card steps. The trade-off is different market coverage, wallet responsibility and geographic restrictions. The United Kingdom is on the current blocked-country list, so this option is only for eligible readers.
Verdict by reader profile

| Trader needing a specific market or established tool | Betfair | Test the exact execution and compatibility advantage |
| Active or profitable user | Both | Compare non-standard fee rules before choosing |
| Eligible wallet-comfortable user | SharkBetX | Modern interface, 3% standard setting and on-chain workflow |
Frequently asked questions
Is Smarkets cheaper than Betfair?
Smarkets Standard is 2%. Betfair's rate depends on account package and region. Compare the rate shown in each account and the accepted price, not one generic percentage.
Which has more liquidity?
Liquidity changes by market and time. Betfair is widely used as the depth-led option, but the only decision-grade evidence is the available size at your exact price when you need it.
Can Smarkets charge more than 2%?
Yes. Its current Select Tier is 3% for a small number of accounts above the published 12-month profit threshold.
Can I use SharkBetX in the United Kingdom?
The underlying Polymarket documentation currently lists the United Kingdom as blocked for order placement. Do not bypass the restriction.
