Which Football League Is Easiest to Predict?
TL;DR
Looking for the league where favourites win most? Portugal, at 56.6%. But across 7,092 matches in seven top leagues they won 53% to 57%, so your pick hardly matters.

Portugal's Primeira Liga is the most predictable of the big European leagues: its favourites won 56.6% of the time across the last three seasons. France's Ligue 1 is the least, at 53.1%. Every other major league falls between those two.
A gap that small barely changes how you bet. Two other numbers matter far more: how often a league draws, and how many goals it produces.
Which football league is easiest to predict
The fairest test is how often the favourite actually won. Here the favourite is the side with the shortest pre-match odds, not the pundits' pick.
| League | Favourite winshigher is better | Drawslower is better | Home wins | Goals per match |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primeira Liga | highest in column, best: 56.6% | 25.8% | 42.6% | 2.71 |
| Eredivisie | 55.2% | 25.4% | 44.3% | 3.14 |
| La Liga | 54.9% | 26.1% | highest in column: 45.8% | 2.65 |
| Premier League | 54.2% | 24.5% | 43.2% | 2.99 |
| Serie A | 53.9% | highest in column: 28.0% | lowest in column: 40.2% | lowest in column: 2.53 |
| Bundesliga | 53.6% | 25.4% | 42.0% | highest in column: 3.20 |
| Ligue 1 | lowest in column: 53.1% | lowest in column, best: 23.7% | 44.0% | 2.83 |
Seasons 2023/24 through 2025/26, from completed match results. A draw counts as a loss for a bet on either side. Only these seven leagues are compared; smaller leagues are not in the data.
What the gap is worth
Bet the favourite blindly in Portugal instead of France and you win roughly one extra match in every twenty-eight.
Price takes most of it back. Favourites in a predictable league are priced shorter because they win more often, so each extra win pays less. The league does not give you an edge; it only changes where you have to look for one.
Which league has the most draws
Serie A, at 28.0% over three seasons, against 23.7% in Ligue 1. That is about four more draws in every hundred matches, and a draw beats both the home and the away backer.
Most league comparisons leave it out, yet it decides whether a match-winner strategy survives. Take a system built on French football to Italy and each of those extra draws is a losing bet, whichever side it backed.
Which leagues score the most goals
The Bundesliga leads at 3.20 goals per match, the Eredivisie is close behind at 3.14, and Serie A is lowest at 2.53. Two-thirds of a goal a game is a far larger gap than anything in the predictability column.
This is the gap worth acting on. A line of 2.5 goals means something different in Munich than in Milan, and a strategy that backs the over in one league can be the wrong side of the market in another.
Does home advantage still matter
Yes, but unevenly. La Liga has the strongest at 45.8% home wins, Serie A the weakest at 40.2%.
Serie A is consistent across all three:
- fewest home wins, 40.2%;
- most draws, 28.0%;
- fewest goals, 2.53 a match.
Matches there are tight and low-scoring, and playing at home helps less than anywhere else in the group.
How the leagues are built
The seven leagues in the data above are not the same betting product. Two things change what a season gives you: how many matches it holds, and whether it stops in midwinter.
| Leagues | Teams | Matches a season |
|---|---|---|
| Premier League, La Liga, Serie A | 20 | 380 |
| Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Eredivisie, Primeira Liga | 18 | 306 |
A shorter season gives you fewer matches to learn from, and a long winter break can leave the form you read before it out of date. In 2025/26 Ligue 1 stopped for three weeks, from the weekend of 13 December to the weekend of 3 January, and the Bundesliga and the Eredivisie were both out until 9 January. Serie A played straight through, as the Premier League does every season; there, knowing which players get rested in a crowded festive schedule is worth more than any season average. Bookmakers also price the biggest leagues in the most detail, so some of the bets in this guide are simply not offered on a quiet midweek fixture.
Choose a market before choosing a match
The tables above do not say who will win. They say which markets deserve your time in each league: the draw and the under in Serie A, the totals line in the Bundesliga and the Eredivisie, and the match winner almost nowhere, because it is the most traded and tightest priced line. Match the market to what you can actually judge.
| Market | What decides it | Best used where |
|---|---|---|
| Match result | Form and draws | Sparingly |
| Draw no bet | Team strength | Many draws |
| Asian handicap | Winning margin | Lopsided games |
| Totals | Goal rate | League tempo |
| Both teams to score | Both attacks | Open leagues |
| Player props | Minutes, role | Rotation news |
| Outrights | Squad depth | Early season |
The Premier League and La Liga carry the deepest menus, and our guide to Premier League betting markets shows how far the options run there. A model built for goals says little about cards, so do not force one dataset onto every market.
Whatever you pick, treat a league's reputation as a starting point. "High-scoring league" hides the differences between teams, between the start and the end of a season, and between the sides that were there last year and the ones just promoted. Use this season's numbers, over a stretch of matches you fix in advance.
A pre-match evidence sheet
Before you bet, write down what you know and how sure you are. One line each, marked confirmed, projected or unknown, so a guess never becomes a fact by the time you stake.
- When you looked, and the price on the board at that moment
- Expected line-up, with official team news kept apart from projections
- Who is unavailable, and who replaces them
- Days of rest and travel for both sides
- Likely formation and who takes the set pieces
- Each side's scoring rate this season
- Weather, only when it is sourced and matters
- The one thing that would prove your view wrong
Our guide to the basics of betting on football covers the groundwork for this sheet. A late line-up change does not create value on its own: update your probability, check the new price, then decide. News already in the price is not an edge just because it is important.
What actually decides whether you win
It comes down to the prices you get and the markets you understand.
Depth matters. A league where every book prices the same eight markets gives you more chances to find a mispriced one than one where only the match winner is quoted. Timing matters as much. Team news and line-up leaks arrive at different times in different leagues: an early price carries more uncertainty and often more value, a late price better information and thinner margins. Decide which side of that trade you are on before you look at the board.
Then keep a record that separates judgement from luck. A winning bet at a poor price was still a weak decision, and a losing bet may have been well priced, so log the decision as well as the result:
- The price you took, and when you took it
- Your own probability, and the fair price it implies
- The closing price
- The stake
- Why you disagreed with the market
- The result
Turn the price you can actually get into a probability with the odds converter, see how much of the market is margin with the vig calculator, and check that an edge exists before sizing anything with the Kelly criterion calculator.
One league, one tracked idea
Pick a single league and a single claim you can be wrong about. "The market underrates promoted sides at home in the first ten rounds" is testable. "Serie A is easier" is not. Test it against the prices that were on the board at the time, never against the final table.
Fifty bets tells you very little; two hundred starts to separate a real pattern from a good run. Until then, treat the idea as unproven. Keep stakes small enough that a bad month is survivable, set your own loss limit before the season starts rather than after a bad weekend, and keep money you need for anything else outside the bankroll. No amount of league analysis removes the risk of loss.
Frequently asked questions
Which football league is easiest to predict?
Portugal's Primeira Liga, narrowly. The favourite won 56.6% of matches there across the 2023/24 to 2025/26 seasons, against 53.1% in Ligue 1 at the other end. The gap between the most and least predictable of the big seven is only three and a half percentage points, and shorter prices on those favourites cancel most of the advantage.
Which league has the most draws?
Serie A, at 28.0% of matches over the same three seasons, compared with 23.7% in Ligue 1. That matters because a draw loses both the home and the away match-winner bet, so a high-draw league punishes a strategy built on picking winners.
Does the league you choose give you an edge?
No. Bookmakers price each league to its own tendencies, so a predictable league comes with shorter favourites. An edge comes from finding prices that are wrong, not from picking a competition where the strong teams win slightly more often.
What is the smartest way to bet on football?
Specialise. Pick one or two leagues where you can follow rotation, schedules and news faster than the price moves, compare the same market across books before staking, and log results by league so the record tells you where you actually hold an edge.
